I like bikes

Pure and simple.

(Let me preface this post with the fact that I really have no idea really about bikes and usually go by how pretty they are.)

Every time I go to the bike store I drool over all the bikes and I think of all the different ones I would like.

Here is one I am currently drooling over:

It’s a single speed with a flip flop hub so you can have it coast if you want to, or you can be all serious and make it a fixed gear. I especially like this bike because it is a single speed but with some style. Let me now point out some key points here:

  • There are these neat fenders that look like wood, those are great when riding through puddles.
  • There is a coffee cup holder on the handlebar…so cool
  • There is a little picture of a coffee cup on the seat tube ( I think there is a better name for it…but I don’t spend a lot of time with bike anatomy)
  • It’s just cool

But it is expensive ($500+)…it is on sale at Incycle but George keeps reminding me that we are savings for a wedding….(which by the way, is really started to take over my life and we are still a year and a half away)

The other bike I would want would be a mountain bike, mostly to ride on fire roads and just to have some fun.

Something like this would suit my fancy just fine:

Some crucial components on this bike that I like:

  • Hardtail (this means the back part doesn’t have any fancy shocks)
  • Shocks in the front that you can turn on and off
  • Disc brakes

My problem with a mountain bike is that I just don’t know if I would really like it. I have done it a couple of times but I really think it would be worth it to me to demo a bike and see how I like mountain biking. I had a really bad accident as a kid once on trails and had to get 7 stitches in my lower lip. Fortunately, since I live in Los Angeles, a plastic surgeon was on call and so you can’t even see the scar. This bike is at a reasonable cost of $470 brand new (on sale would be better).

Then, of course I would have my triathlon bike…because those are just kick ass! And I think, once again, I would have to go with Specialized on this one.

This is the Transition Comp and sells for a sweet $2,800 (so far the most expensive bike on my little list here). With a nice wheel upgrade…this would be a really sweet bike to have ready for you to ride in transition!

As for my road bike, I would get this:

The Roubaix Elite Compact, great if you want to be a tad more comfortable on long rides and has some really nice components. This one comes in at a cool $2,200.

I realize every single bike on here is a Specialized, and I ride a Specialized now…I am in no way sponsored by Specialized as everyone should probably know how slow I am by now. If they had a slow division, I would be fully sponsored! I just like the bikes….because Specialized is such a large company they are able to offer a lot that I like. For one, they look cool! They also have some good components at a good price. However, they really know how to save a penny when making these bikes too as evidenced by my entry level bike with Shimano components that don’t even exist anymore they are so crappy!

So all totaled, I would be in the hole for $6k if I filled up my dance card with all these fancy bikes! I also would probably have a hard time storing them…but I would figure out a way :-)

Now about that wedding….

Once upon a time, in a land far far away

there lived a girl named Kristen. Her schedule was very busy and she worked out at least 3 times a week.

That girl is GONE!

Now Kristen sits on her ass regularly to make sure she gets in Glee, Cougartown, Desperate Housewives, Dexter, and Brother and Sisters. Throw in a few episodes of NCIS and you really have a summary of what I have been up to.

It’s not the weather, the weather has actually been really nice. It is the TIME CHANGE! I get off of work at 5PM and it is already dark…and well… that sort of sucks. Not to mention that I don’t have any time during the week after work to do anything.

Monday – Choir

Tuesday  - Church Thing

Wednesday – George night

Thursday – More Choir

Friday – Date night…with George

Saturday – Recovery sleep from busy week

Sunday – Church and then lazy all day still trying to recover

Then it starts back up again. :-(

I am not a morning person, so waking up early to workout is just out of the question. I just DO NOT have that level of motivation to leave my warm cozy bed. But I need to do something…I need to get moving because the fat isn’t going away and neither is my appetite. So here is my solution…I have a spare bedroom that is currently being used as a dumping ground for all things crap. My goal is to clear all that crap away and set up the trainer in there so that I can at least hop on the bike from time to time (even for 30 minutes to an hour). I would actually like to turn it into a little workout room as well and get one of those swiss balls so that I can do those stupid exercises that make me shake because my abs are so weak. I have already tried doing some clean up, but because I don’t have a lot of extra time it is sort of taking a while. There is a guest bed that needs to come out and I need to find a productive home for a bunch of other crap…so I have my work cut out for me.

Then I have another little thing I need to come up with a solution for, how to get cable to my small college dorm TV without buying another cable box…I was thinking I could run a splitter from my cable box in my room and run the cord through the hallway (classy, I know). I don’t mind so much if I have to change the channel in the other room because I will just set it on what I like (Glee) and just watch and pedal.

So things I need to do to get this room going-

List #1 (top priority)

1. Move bed

2. Find home for documents that are currently in shoe boxes

3. Work out TV situation

List #2 (extra crap)

1. Buy ceiling fan to install over the current gaping hole with the wires hanging out

2. Paint the room some sort of serene color

3. Put down hardwood floors to make it feel like a studio

As you can see…list 2 might not happen this weekend :-) But it is a start…right?

Operation: Get Kristen off her ass….HAS COMMENCED!

Slight Redemption

So remember when I totally bashed Brightroom for the Nike Human Race? Well, they sort of redeemed themselves for the prelude. Here are the shots they took…I might actually fork over the $50 for a key chain…

Even got one with George in there, he always likes to ride behind me…I wonder why….hmmmmm :-D

I am also impressed with myself, I really show my true level of vanity because I felt miserable but every picture I am able to bust out a smile (except for maybe the last one). Good job to me!

Solvang Prelude Weekend Report

Early Friday morning George and I packed up the Jeep with all our camping stuff and the bikes. Earlier, when I was filling the tires with air, I noticed a gash on the side wall of my back tire. I showed it to George and he wanted to take it to the tire store to make sure everything was okay. Sure enough the dang thing had to be replaced! But fortunately, they gave me credit for the tread that was still there (as I had just replaced this tire not too long ago) and the whole thing cost me $28. I thought for sure I would be in the hole for $100…Once we took care of that we got some ice and we were on the road. The drive was nice, George knows some back ways so we never sat in traffic and got to see a lot of farmland. We eventually got up there and got to our campsite. We decided to camp at a place called Flying Flags. They are mostly an RV campground, but have some grassy areas for people who want to camp. They have showers and bathrooms, a pool, jacuzzi, rec room, dog park…the place had everything. When we checked in we got some fresh baked cookies as a gift from them (how nice!) and then we headed over to set up camp. We had the tent set up fairly quickly, here is George proudly standing by the home he built us:

We had some guys next to us that were doing the ride and another couple 2 campsites over. There was a lot of space and the car was parked right next to our campsite. We were also along a dried riverbed and other than the nearby freeway…it was just like being in the wilderness :-)

Once we set up our little camp, we took a nap…it was exhausting doing all that work! Then we woke up and got ready for dinner. Before we went to dinner though we went and picked up our packets. I had forgotten my sunglasses so I picked up a pair at the expo. While there we met up with some of the other group that was going to dinner at The Hitching Post. We were torn whether or not to go to The Hitching Post or this other place that we were going to the next night. After we found out that the other place was a little out of the way, we decided to stay in town and go with the rest of the group to The Hitching Post. Our reservations were at 8 and we were a little early, so we all went to a little tasting bar called Tastes of the Valleys. Here is everyone enjoying some excellent wine that Andy picked out and some fun conversation:

Then it was time to go to dinner, so we all made our way over to The Hitching Post and popped open some more wine!

Can you tell this is a wine trip yet?

We weren’t sure about the food at this place. They specialize in red meat and George and I really don’t eat that anymore. So I splurged a little and got the crab and George got a fish dish that I honestly don’t remember because I was WAY too busy with my delicious crab!

It was also all cut for me which was awesome because I didn’t have to work that hard to eat. Whenever I get a bucket of crab I feel like it is so much work just to get some food in my mouth!

After dinner we headed back to our little tent. It was pretty cold out, so we bundled up and jumped in our sleeping bags. I had a hard time sleeping because I realized that I need to move my legs at night. I would wake up in a virtual panic attack because I felt like I was trapped. I later got some great advice from Bruce about how to bend and move around with the bag and the second night was MUCH better!

The group decided to start and hour later from the actual ride because the first winery we were stopping at didn’t open until 10AM, so George and I woke up around 7AM and got ready for the ride. We had prepared our bikes the day before, so we just had to worry about what we were wearing. Once we were all done with that we hopped in the car and headed into town for an authentic Danish breakfast! We got three pastry’s and they were yummy!

Then George asked me why I was taking a picture of just the food and he wanted a picture of him…so here he is with the yummy danishes.

If you are curious…that is 1 cherry boat, 1 bear claw and some other one that George picked out.

After breakfast we headed to the start and met up with the group. After about 10 minutes we were off, and true to PTC form…they went a little hard and lost me 5 miles in. POOEY! Oh well….expected that… The first winery was about 20 miles in and there was some decent riding. It would have been nice to stop and take a few pictures along the way, but I was just so focused on not stopping. I regret that a little bit because some of the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. I will have to make a special trip out there just for photography purposes (and wine of course). So the first stop was Bridlewood Winery. I enjoy this winery because it is pretty and the wine is good. George and I went there on our last trip up to Solvang and we ate lunch out on their massive property. Here is George having some of the wine from our tasting:

Bruce, Denise and Andy enjoying their tasting:

And here is the winery in all its fake mission glory:

And its pretend vineyards in the front for good measure:

So pretty though, even if it is as staged as Disneyland…

I picked up a couple bottles of wine and gave them to Monet, she was following us in her car so that we had somewhere to put our stuff that we bought :-) That was SUPER nice of her!

The next stop was Zaca Mesa…and between these two wineries is when I had my breakdown. I had felt a headache come on within the first 4 miles and realized I had forgotten to bring any drugs with me. I also forgot my asthma medicine which really made it awesome! There was some decent climbing and some rolling hills that just killed me so by the time I got to Zaca Mesa I was done. I had a full blown migraine, my legs were dead and I had already gone through a crying fit (which actually helped).  In fact, let me digress a bit here…before I burst into tears I was feeling horrible, I couldn’t go much farther, but AFTER I got out some emotions, I was at least able to get to the next winery. This brings me to the conclusion that women are allowed to cry whenever they want because it only makes them stronger in the end…sometime we just need to get it out!

At Zaca Mesa I threw some water on my face, drank some water, and Denise took care of me and cut me some cheese and gave me some crackers. George got me some ice and I just wanted to lay down. I did, however, manage to pull it together for a group shot:

That is what we call priorities people!

It was about 12:30 and I knew Linda would be with her daughter, so I waited till 1PM (when she was done) and gave her a ring to come get me. Within 20 minutes she was there to rescue me and had some migraine medicine as well. But while I was waiting for her I took a couple of nice shots of the valley we were in:

George decided to stay with me and Linda took us both back to the car. She also offered up her shower at the hotel, so I accepted her kind offer and took a nice hot shower! After that, I was feeling better so George and I stopped off at the Firestone Brewery. I had always wanted to go there and I figured now was as good a time as any. So George and I each did a beer tasting there, I got a t-shirt and we also picked up a gift for our campsite neighbors that had helped us out with a blown fuse problem the day before.

Then we went back to the campsite and George changed and we headed out to the Full of Life Flatbread Company in Los Alamos. Here is a picture of George and I hanging out front waiting for the group:

The dinner there was delicious! They are actually a factory during the week and on the weekends they open up for dinner. They actually sell their frozen pizzas at Whole Foods and they are all made in their fire oven thingy…bottom line…the food was AMAZING!

After dinner we weren’t sure if the party was over or not, so we headed over to Bruce and Denise’s cottage they had rented and hung out there and talked. When Denise started to knock out, we figured it was time to head back to our cold tent. So we did and this time we were a little more prepared and slept a bit better. We were up before dawn the next morning, packed up and headed down to make it in time for church at 10AM. We made it there with plenty of time and right after church we knocked out and were lazy all day…it was great!

Overall it was a good weekend, however…I think I will keep the wine tasting and cycling separate. I would love to ride through again and then go back to the car and go wine tasting. I think that is the best set up for me :-)

Warning: Fun Weekend Up Ahead

This weekend George and I are heading up to Solvang for the Solvang Prelude. We will be doing the metric century which is 65 miles. My longest ride to date has been 70 miles and I did the Tour de Palm Springs half century last February…so this should be interesting. However, I am less worried about the distance because we will be stopping a lot. You see…George and I are winos. One of the first little trips we went on as a couple (so many years ago) was to Solvang for wine tasting. So when we heard that a fellow PTC member would be planning a wine tasting trip along with the Solvang Prelude…well…we were in!

At first George and I were really stoked about doing this ride…but we started doing research on the price of hotels and it was ridiculous. Most places averaged over $200 a night and a cheap motel was at $100. With those prices we would on;y be able to spend one night and then head back home after a long day on the bike (a two-hour drive). So then I suggested camping and after doing some more research I found an RV park in Buellton that also has camping grounds all for the low price of $30 a night, SOLD! They also have full showers, a heated pool, hot tub, recreation room…this is my kind of camping. George had all the tents, sleeping bags, air mattress, we just picked up some headlamps and a lantern. It should be a beautiful weekend and I have lots of cozy warm clothes to keep me warm at night. I am really excited and George is too. I just have one problem…I am not sure what to wear :-/

Bring on the bikes, camping and wine!

Wine Tasting 05I took this photo in 2006 on our first trip to Solvang, really hope the weather is as nice this weekend.

Monster Dash 5k Race Report

Or, Halloween costume #3

I wanted to do a fun 5k, so I googled Los Angeles 5k’s and found one on Halloween morning in the Santa Clarita area. I figured this would be a cool race because I could dress up and have some fun with it, plus it was only $25 and came with a technical tee :-) I am easily bribed…

At first George was like…”Have fun! I’ll be sleeping!” but I think the idea of doing a fun, non-competative race got him and last minute he decided he would do it with me. He also got a free costume from work, and it was a pretty cool costume!

So the morning of the race we woke up bright and early and headed out there. We got there a little after 7AM, I got my race packet and George purchased his race entry. We were way early so we headed back to the car and got our costumes on and also stayed warm. Now, it was abut 47 degrees out so for us Southern Californians that is ASS cold! I had to go potty a couple times and the 2nd time I went they didn’t have any more teepee in the porta potty :-/ Well…turns out there was a whole set of porta potties around the corner that I could have gone to and didn’t…so that was a HUGE fail on my part. It was finally time to head over to the start line, so after stripping down to my little outfit I was ready. Here is I am waiting in the sun because I was so cold:

As you can see…not much to keep me warm.

And here is George in his costume…he was much warmer than me:

CIMG0178

For someone who wasn’t that into the race…he sure got into it with that costume! HA!

They warned us that this course would be hilly…but I am not sure I was so prepared for it. I have this tendency of totally forgetting that I have asthma and forget to take my inhaler. Well, I forgot to take my inhaler…so the gun goes off and we start running. Within a few miutes my chest was tight and I was not doing well. The air was really cold and my poor lungs were not prepared. So I had to walk almost right away…not to mention we were already running up a little hill. We ran through the sunflower fields then went onto our first hill, walked up it and ran down then turned a corner, and went up Dead Man’s Hill…once at the top it looked like this:

It was a bit of a climb…the path then ran along the top of the ridge then turned around and went back down through the corn fields then through scarecrow alley and eventually to the finish. They had people hiding in the corn and sunflower fields and on actually scared me because I was so focused on breathing…after he scared me I didn’t let it happen again!

They had masks and stuff and looked like scarecrows so it was hard to see what was real and what was fake.

After coming through the finish we grabbed our little pumpkin cakes that they gave out to everyone and we also stuck around to get some pumpkins! I picked one out and George picked out the other one. Here are George and I in the pumpkin patch area after the race:

Our overall time SUCKED! It was a cool 43:10, HAHAHA! My excuse is the afro…

But guess what? It was such a blast and the people were great and I would love to do this race again :-)

There were other people dressed up as well, there was a Barney, cupcake, hot dog, Cesar, another 70s runner like me and a bunch more that I can’t remember.

For Halloween I took the dogs on a walk to see all the trick or treaters and then went back to the house to intercept about 5 groups of kids that came to the door. Since we don’t get many kids, we give them huge hand fulls of chocolate and that way I don’t end up eating the rest.

Hope you had a fun Halloween! Time to think about the big bird now!
